STATE
MARIJUANA TAX STAMPS
Beginning with Arizona in 1983, a number of states have revived taxation
of marijuana and other illegal drugs as part of the new "War on
Drugs". 24 states have used revenue stamps to evidence payment
of the tax.
Stamps have been found 'on piece'
in some states and payment does not legalize the marijuana. As you will
see in the scans the stamps varied in quality, style and value with some
states issuing different colored stamps depending on whether you are
planning to smoke, sell or grow marijuana.
The highest face value printed
on any US stamp is $100,000.00 on a Texas 500 gram drug tax stamp.
North Carolina taxes 'separated
stalks and stems' at .40 cents a gram, the cheapest state drug tax stamp I've
seen issued.
North Dakota issued 1000 sets
of three different drug tax stamps in a drug tax program that was never
implemented.
In Nevada you had to pay $250.00
to register as a drug dealer and then pay $100.00 for a stamp. I know
of two copies with none being exhibited. I'm told Nevada denies issuing
stamps.
Wisconsin like many states
taxed all types of illicit drugs and issued various
stamps for this purpose.
According to Rob
Henak Maine sold only one stamp for $150.00 before its tax law was
repealed. He has exhibited and published articles concerning drug tax stamps.
Montana passed a law, but their
Supreme Court declared it unconstitutional before stamps were sold.

I am looking to put together a collection of all 24 state
stamps.
I have heard that Puerto Rico and Guam also may have issued stamps. let
me know if you have any info or images for this site.
